There are few sights more reassuring in Harpenden than a queue forming outside a pub before lunchtime, and on Sunday 30th August, The Silver Cup provided exactly that. Matt and Olivia's annual summer barbecue party took over the terrace overlooking the Common, and for one glorious afternoon the town's temple of refined British fare swapped white tablecloths for smoke, sunshine, and some of the best burgers this side of anywhere.
This year the whole operation revolved around Matt's custom barbecue, and it's a testament to the man that he can make charcoal behave with the same precision he applies to a beef tartare. The burgers—which we first encountered at Classics on the Common a month or so back and have been quietly thinking about ever since—were every bit as good the second time around. We cannot recommend them highly enough, and we say that as a family who takes burger recommendations extremely seriously.
But it wasn't just burgers. There were lobster rolls, proper Caesar salads, and Matt's frankly ridiculous new potatoes done on the barbecue—a dish that shouldn't be a highlight and yet somehow always is. A few other little treats rounded things out, all at very reasonable prices, which felt almost like a clerical error given the quality coming off the grill.

The weather, for once, read the invitation and turned up in its Sunday best. The place was absolutely packed—queues to get in, every table claimed, and magnums of rosé disappearing at a rate that suggested the whole town had collectively decided summer wasn't ending without a fight. The vibe was gloriously relaxed and properly child-friendly: friends, families, and happy residents soaking up the last of the season with the Common stretching out in front of them.
A word of hard-won advice: reserve. We didn't—a rookie error we'll be quietly ashamed of until next August—but we managed to pounce on a table for long enough to do the menu justice. If you were lucky enough to book one, congratulations; you played the game correctly. And spare a thought for the team behind it all. If you'd caught Olivia mid-service, you'd have seen someone running a very busy, probably quite stressful operation while somehow still being the warmest host in town. It's a fantastic annual fixture of the Harpenden dining scene, and the effort behind it shows.

This was our first year attending, and it's gone straight into the family calendar as an annual tradition. If you've somehow not tried The Silver Cup yet, consider this your nudge: it's one of our favourite places in town, our default answer to "where should we eat?", and reliably home to high-end, tasty cooking with hospitality to match. If you missed the party this year, make sure you don't next summer.
Now, if someone could just invent a way of getting a table at these things without either booking weeks ahead or hovering near finishing diners like a well-dressed seagull, we'd be very grateful.
