The Silver Cup is, without a doubt, our favorite place in Harpenden. Combining Michelin-level cooking from Matt with warm, family-style hospitality from Olivia, this Common-side gem has marked all our family’s milestones—and remains one of the absolute best reasons we call this town home.

If you want to understand why we traded the buzz of London for the leafy streets of Harpenden, you only need to spend an evening at The Silver Cup. Situated right off the Common, this brother-and-sister-run gem has quietly become the culinary beating heart of the town. Run by Matt and Olivia, it is consistently, brilliantly excellent. Olivia has known our son since before he was born, and the warmth with which she welcomes us back—always asking after him—is the kind of hospitality you simply can’t write a training manual for.

To be frank, Matt’s food deserves a Michelin star, and it's long overdue. There is an immense joy in watching him tweak, refine, and polish his ideas week after week, turning already-excellent dishes into absolute knockouts. The main dining room is a beautiful space for high-end British fare and special one-off wine bottles, but the real secret weapon is the relaxed, walk-in bar area which serves the exact same menu.

When the sun makes an appearance, the outdoor terrace offers lovely views of Harpenden (even if you have to ignore a bit of road traffic). There, you can enjoy a reduced bar menu featuring their legendary starters, including the beef tartare with bone marrow and gem lettuce, and the garlic-buttered scallops.

This isn't just a restaurant for us; it’s a living timeline. It was the last meal we had before our son was born, the first we had after, and the first place he ever visited. Olivia and Matt have built something truly special here, and it remains one of the single best reasons we moved to Harpenden. Five out of five—highly recommended.

The Silver Cup Cheat Sheet

  • The Bar Hack: Don't have a booking? The walk-in bar area serves the full restaurant menu in a beautifully relaxed setting.
  • The Terrace Vibe: Perfect for a sunny lunch, provided you don't mind a side of passing traffic with your scallops.
  • Steak Night: Held on the last Wednesday of the month. It is always sold out, and it is absolutely worth setting a calendar reminder for.
